Indoor Air Quality and VOCs

The quality of the air we breathe can have a major impact on our health, wellbeing and the environment.

Outdoor air quality featured most frequently in the mainstream press, is strongly impacted by pollution from transport and industry. Indoor air quality is becoming increasingly high profile, affected by both outdoor pollution and also impaired by internal odours and gases.

The main ingredients in paint that partly contribute to poor indoor air quality are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are also emitted from other sources such as household cleaning products, soft furnishings or carpets in our homes or businesses. Although VOCs evaporate into the air at room temperature, once in the air and exposed to sunlight, they react with nitrogen oxides already present to create pollution, which in high concentrations can affect health.

Although the pollution impact of VOCs from paint is very small (less than 2% of the total amount of VOCs emitted) Dulux Trade Airsure represents our continued efforts to create innovative solutions to minimize the impact on IAQ in homes and commercial spaces.

Building Compliance Certification

Environmental assessment methods such as BREEAM and LEED help design specifiers and building owners to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, and they are important methods for assessing, rating and certifying the overall sustainability of a building.

There are two key measures for securing credits in the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sections of BREEAM, LEED and WELL: VOC Content and Emissions. VOC content explains the amount of VOC’s contained within the product declared by the manufacturer. However, there are more stringent requirements for capturing emissions data, that is, the VOC’s that are released into the air after application. When measured after 28 days in line with BREEAM compliance both Airsure Vinyl Matt and Diamond Matt achieve the exemplary VOC emission level of less than 0.01 mg/m3.

The Dulux Trade Airsure range has been examined by external testing house, Eurofins. Undertaking complex testing, their robust processes provide an independent evaluation, to give you full confidence our products meet the expected industry benchmarks, and help you on your way to reaching the sustainable building accreditation you are striving to achieve.

The Dulux Trade Airsure range complies with the BREEAM NC 2018, LEED v4.1 & WELL v2.0

BREEAM RATING

All products in the new Dulux Trade Airsure range are compliant with the IAQ requirements in BREEAM NC 2018 and LEED v4.1 (exemplary level in BREEAM), giving you the support to achieve maximum credits from indoor paint specification, and taking you one step closer towards achieving your sustainability objectives.

1 Based on in-can VOC content, measured in accordance with ISO 11890-2:2013.

2 BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment.

3 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership.

4 Independently tested for emissions, including formaldehyde, TVOC, TSVOC and Cat 1A & 1B carcinogens.  Compliant with the emissions criteria in BREEAM New Construction 2018. (UK and International), LEED v4.1 & WELL 2.0.
